VILLAINS & SWEATHEARTS
for String Quartet
Music by Daniel Kelley | Poems by Edy Nell Aleki
A terrific new five-movement work for string quartet based on favorite fairy tale characters. Five poems about five fairytale characters, with music set not to the original story, but to Miss Aleki’s poems. Each poem is written both above the music, and transcribed in the music itself as a guide to what is occurring when. The poems should be read aloud before the performance of each corresponding movement, but the performers should feel free to do as they wish. SCROLL down to see Videos of a live school performance! This quartet was designed for school performances, but could be performed anywhere. Below is the first poem in Villains and Sweethearts.
What is that I hear?
There is nothing that I fear!
It was naught; or so It would appear,
What was that, again?
Someone dares to breach my den!
They shall pay; with not one blow but ten,
A little boy I see,
Just how insolent is he!
Shall I squash him? Or toss him out to sea?
I’M A GIANT, he’s a bean,
aaRRR, How DARE he make a scene!
Hey, I like this; it’s fun to be so mean,
Now he’s gone, where’d he go?
FEE FI FO FUM, what a foe!
Well, ‘til next time; it’s nap time now, you know.
